Where we are

Situated in the wonderfully historic City of York, we are proud to have a large shop & workshop in one of the city's oldest streets – Shambles. Whilst many of the properties in the street have been re-built over the years, and are now steel framed buildings, our building still retains its original oak timber frame – strengthened by a full refurbishment in 1995.

Many of the shops in Shambles were traditionally butchers – the word Shambles deriving from the Anglo-Saxon 'Shamels' or 'Fleshammels' (literally flesh-shelves) the word for the shelves that butchers used to display their meat. As recently as 1872 there were twenty-five butchers' shops in the street, and there is still a butcher in the adjacent Little Shambles which leads to York's open-air Newgate Market.

Among the buildings of the Shambles is a shrine to Saint Margaret Clitherow, who was married to a butcher who owned and lived in a shop there.

A number of the shops on the street still have meat-hooks hanging outside – including our own at no. 31 & 32 and, below them, shelves on which meat would have been displayed. Also inside no.31 is the original meat rail from the time when this building was still used as a butchers. We feel we're keeping up some of the Shambles' tradition by still specialising in a meat derived product!

Our history

Cox's Leather Shop was established in 1921 by William Cox – initially trading as Cox of Northampton (Mr Cox had moved from that area). Until the 1960's the company specialized in shoe & leather repairs, and whilst this is still a significant part of our business we are now predominantly a leather goods retailer with a vast range of products, and we hope you'll come and see us.
